SUMMARY:Humbuckin' Pickups (CD Launch)
DESCRIPTION:Solid musicianship along with The Humbuckin’ Pickups genuine enjoyment and thrill at performing and roaring vocals translates into a truly great show. The Humbuckers are story tellers\, grabbing tales from wherever they travel and bringing the stories to life through song. \nOne minute you’ll be in the 1800’s traipsing the floor boards of a country pub with an Australian icon\, next you’ll be surviving a shipwreck in Namibia\, or even shedding a tear for a rose loving ghost. With an equally strong Americana influence The Humbuckers will also have you kicking up your heels and singing along to songs of drinking and dubious life choices. \nForming in 2012\, the core Humbuckin’ couple of Ewan and Nadine\, have been leading various musicians to festivals and astray ever since. \n\n

SUMMARY:The Big Sing
DESCRIPTION:When people put their voices together in harmony\, it touches something deep inside us. It’s almost impossible to find a culture that doesn’t have a tradition of story telling through song. SUMMARY:The Bean Project
DESCRIPTION:From the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne come The Bean Project\, a vibrant brass clad quintet blending the woody sounds of folk and jazz with the groove and bounce of funk and soul  – most aptly described as ‘the odd marriage of James Taylor and The Cat Empire’. \nIn June 2017\, The Bean Project teamed up with David Carr at Rangemaster Studios to record their debut album ‘Naked Trees.’ Like a good whisky\, ‘Naked Trees‘ is strong\, woody and rich\, makes you think about your life and gives you a bubbling desire to dance. Swaying from enthusiastic groovy numbers such as ‘Gaps’ to tear-jerking singer-songwriter ballads such as ‘Never Been More Alone\,’ the album is a diverse collection of 10 songs inspired by jazz\, funk\, country and pop\, played by an equally as diverse cast of musicians from different musical sensibilities. \nAs is tradition in young bands\, one of the founding members\, Bryce\, left the band to pursue other goals. After a short period of stagnancy\, a short period of inspiration and then a prolific out-pour of new music\, Ben reformed the band with Isaac Gunnoo on bass\, Maddison Carter on drums\, Jared Becker on tenor sax and Callum Mintzis on trombone. \n \nSUPPORT ACTS: \n\nFriendly Creatures\n Lonesome Still

SUMMARY:Michael Waugh & Rich Davies
DESCRIPTION:Singer-songwriters Michael Waugh and Rich Davies have the knack of writing songs with relatable and all-too-real themes. They have teamed up for their first Australian tour and are stopping off at Selby to share an evening of story and song. \nNominated for Best New Talent at the 2017 Golden Guitar awards\, Michael Waugh gives a profound new voice to the Australian experience. His insightful storytelling cuts to the emotional heart of everyday life. A unique\, intelligent and emotionally charged performer\, Waugh has been compared to the honesty and power of Australian folk and country legends\, Mick Thomas\, Paul Kelly and John Williamson. SUMMARY:Parkville
DESCRIPTION:Belgrave-born folk-pop darlings Parkville got their start busking on the city streets of Melbourne. Liam\, Michael and Dylan soon developed their winning formula: a driving Mumford & Sons-style backbone featuring rich three-part vocal harmonies and soaring violin riffs\, taking influence from The Beach Boys and Punch Brothers. \nSettling on their name in late 2017\, the band didn’t take long to produce their first EP as Parkville\, from which singles “Shining” and “Brando” held #2 and #4 in the Triple J Unearthed charts\, as well as receiving Australia-wide radio play. 2018 brought Parkville the opportunity to support international touring acts and a hugely successful headline show at the Toff in Town\, which critics praised as: \n“nothing short of spectacular” ~The Real Songwriters of Melbourne \nParkville are kicking off 2019 with the release of their new single Rooks\, a uniquely devious protest song that keeps its heart on its sleeve but a knife behind its back. Rooks pushes the boundaries of what a simple violin-guitar-piano trio can achieve\, evoking a Hans Zimmer film score\, an 80’s rock jam and a bustling Cuban footpath in equal measures\, and is available on all digital platforms Feb 16th. \n\n

DESCRIPTION:Folk Festival funny man and Maldon Ministerial award winner (2011). Tim Woodz has supported ex TISM Damien Cowell’s Disco Machine at the Corner Hotel and played multiple supports for Tex Perkins and the Dark Horses. A reporter after a gig at Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory wrote: \n“Tim Woodz is the kind of person your Mum or Dad would describe most fittingly as a ‘duffer’… but Woodz’ charm played a big part in the audience warming up to him. He was all grins and silly anecdotes\, putting the crowd at ease and holding court over a few tall tales.” \nTim is famously known for his Possum song\, Tall Trees and Laundromat songs and on his on stage witty character. SUMMARY:The Big Sing
DESCRIPTION:September celebrates song at Selby Folk Club. Why? Because it’s good for everyone! Singing makes you feel better and it turns out the reasons are physical. Here’s some science… \nSinging has some of the same effects as exercise\, like the release of endorphins\, which give the singer an overall “lifted” feeling and are associated with stress reduction. It’s also an aerobic activity\, meaning it gets more oxygen into the blood for better circulation\, which tends to promote a good mood. \nIn addition\, scientists have identified a tiny organ in the ear called the sacculus\, which responds to the frequencies created by singing. The response creates an immediate sense of pleasure\, regardless of what the singing sounds like.  So it’s just as good for the audience as it is for the performers! \nHeadlining this year’s Big Sing… \n  \nPlatinum Quartet\n \nThe effervescent Platinum Quartet have entertained crowds at public and private functions all over town. They have been competing at song contests since their first show at the SAI National Competition in Sydney in 2014. \nPlatinum Quartet are Alison Brown (Tenor)\, Debbie Neilsen (Lead)\, Margot Thorne (Bass) and Kerry Haddow (Baritone) and they are all members of Vocal Vibes Chorus. \nBesides all things Barbershop and bling\, they also share a love of animals – and have 6 cats\, a dog and a vet between them! \nThey will be proudly supported by: \n\nThe Pulse\nVoKallista\nSweet Sassafras\nTLC

SUMMARY:Tinman / Rich Davies and the Low Road
DESCRIPTION:Born out of a New Year’s Eve road trip and campfire sing-along\, Tinman is a group of friends who make beautiful sounds. They are folkie\, acoustic dreamy pop inspired over many glasses of wine. Infused with the unusual voicings of mandolin\, cigar box guitar\, piano accordion\, ukulele and some (seriously) dreamy vocals\, the seductive harmonies of Tinman linger all around you\, telling you stories of Clementine’s demise\, east coast road trips\, bushland explorations and riverside camp spots. \nWith origins in Melbourne bands DASH and IRIS\, the quartet is a dream combination that come together to create an electric live performance. Come alongside these storytellers and magic weavers and be transported for a little while….. \n  \n \n“With a poet’s heart & rocker’s soul\, Rich Davies & The Low Road deliver a ‘foot-stomping contemporary folk attack” ~ Mick Thomas \nThe Golden Guitar 2018 nominee & his rousing band have been hailed as ‘The Pogues meets Springsteen’ as they peel back the skin of rock’n’roll to expose bones of folk and roots. The Low Road are renowned for their raucous live show and heart-stopping harmonies\, traversing tender ballads to impassioned folk stompers. Placing song craft front and centre\, with Davies’ heart-wrung voice leading the charge. \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Dan Parsons Trio
DESCRIPTION:Singer-songwriter DAN PARSONS sings of the triumphs and anxieties of the human experience. His rich baritone voice and deft guitar style never fail to enthral audiences of all ages\, conjuring up a 1970’s West Coast landscape for the iPhone generation. His songs put you in the room with him\, as tangled up thoughts find sequence and purpose flame-like\, darting from wall to wall to trace a geometry of intense conviction. \nAs an only child growing up in rural Queensland with a clutch of instruments\, ideas and a reel to reel 4-track\, he was afforded the time and space necessary to hone his skills as a songwriter\, multi-instrumentalist and producer. \nHe has released and toured three critically acclaimed solo albums (2010 Firestarter\, which took him to Los Angeles where he showcased at Musexpo\, UK’s Great Escape Festival and Liverpool Sound City; 2013 Dan Parsons self-titled; and 2015 Valleywood which received a nominated for ‘Best Folk-Roots Album’ in the Age Music Victoria Awards and also took him to Nashville\, Tennessee to play the Bluebird Café and perform at AmericanaFest). \n“Oh what a voice! Elegant\, pure\, unhurried.” ~ Martin Jones\, Rhythms Magazine \n“Staggeringly beautiful\, honest and pure.”  ~ Music Pickings \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Jenny Biddle
DESCRIPTION:With SIX albums under her belt and an iTunes chart-topping single\, indie folk/blues songsmith\, Jenny Biddle\, wraps herself around her guitar\, and like a marriage between body and instrument\, she commands the guitar to talk with uncommon skill and absolute self-assurance. Her audience is compelled to join her on a voyage of passion and story in song. \nLive on stage\, with “a banter which is honest\, direct\, personal\, affectionate\, funny and utterly engaging” she has “that peculiar knack for making any space feel like a lounge room. her audience laughs and cries in all the right places. There is an indisputable sophistication in her lyrics that touches upon issues that affect us all; love\, loss\, hopes and fears\, but also delves into the dark honesty of eating disorders\, sexuality\, depression\, only to be lifted by her unexpected comical interjections between songs. \nThe guitar nuts are astounded by her ability to intertwine bass notes\, percussion and melody so seamlessly that one could believe there are more instrumentalists on stage. \n

SUMMARY:Charm of Finches
DESCRIPTION:Melbourne’s sister duo\, Charm of Finches\, aka Mabel and Ivy Windred-Wornes\, sing dreamy harmonies: haunted folk tunes about heartbreak\, solitude and whispering trees. \nThey started busking Appalachian folk songs outside the local veggie shop when they were 11 and 8. The duo have played folk festival stages throughout Australia since 2015\, winning the 2017 National Folk Festival Gill Rees Memorial Young Musician’s’ Award and were a 2017 Young Artist Award Winner for Folk Alliance Australia (FAA). \nIn November 2019 they  released their sophomore album “Your Company” on their own label\, Conversations With Trees\, which has received rave reviews\, and is featuring on major Spotify playlists. \n“’Your Company’ is a deep ocean swaying and heaving with dark tales\, swirling melodies and astounding songs that float upon a hundred lovely stringed things. Songs filled with beauty\, wisdom and magic with some of the sweetest ‘blood harmonies’ you’re likely to hear this side of this century! ” – Khristian Mizzi \n

SUMMARY:Michael Waugh
DESCRIPTION:  \nAfter a time of loss and heartbreak the master songwriter delivers a deeply personal album – dark\, harrowing & distinctly Australian – but ultimately healing. \nWritten and produced through the time of Melbourne’s COVID lockdown\, the emotional core of the album is Waugh’s tribute to his parents who both died within 6 weeks of each other\, just before Melbourne’s first lockdown in 2020. ‘He Taught Me’\, ‘Hold on to the Ones You Love’ and ‘Too Many Drawers’ are heart rending\, deftly told stories about Waugh’s parents\, as he tries to come to terms with their loss. ‘Waugh-heads’ have already come to know and love John and Eileen Waugh as the Dairy Farmer and Heyfield Girl whose stories have lived large in Michael’s first three albums. The Cast is Waugh’s artistic exploration of being broken and learning to heal again. \n  \n \nSupported by duo Grand Baxter. \nBook Tix \n
