SUMMARY:Nick Charles
DESCRIPTION:It’s no surprise that the prestigious Black Rose Acoustic Society in Colorado USA describes Australian guitarist\, Nick Charles\, as “a world class stylist and composer”. His dazzling\, melodic fingerpicking on 6 and 12 string guitars\, stinging slide and a lifetime’s stories and songs from the musical highway has him labelled by the Melbourne Age as “Australia’s virtuoso of acoustic roots and blues”. \nDuring an extensive and acclaimed career\, Nick has released many albums on major roots and guitar music labels. He has garnered world-wide recognition for a series of releases on Black Market Music\, beginning with My Lace and now his most recent albums\, Closer to Home and Return of the Travelling Fingerpicker. This recognition has succeeded in having Nick signed to the Grammy award winning label\, Solid Air Records USA\, home of the world’s finest guitarists. \nAveraging 150 shows a year in Australia\, New Zealand the USA and the UK\, his music encompasses an eclectic mix of acoustic roots including blues\, folk and early ragtime jazz. \n  \n“Dazzling guitar\, muscular vocals and clever\, literate writing!” ~ Little Rock Folk Club Arkansas\, USA \n“An awesome talent” ~ Australian Guitar Magazine \n“Amazingly expressive” ~ herald Sun \n

SUMMARY:Jessica Moussi
DESCRIPTION:Jessica Moussi’s music takes you on a journey from Melbourne’s intimate laneway bars to dusty Middle Eastern streets and back again. Her Middle Eastern heritage is what makes her style unique\, but her voice is what will catch your attention first. Weaving mesmerising harmonies\, she confesses wrong doing\, observes relationships and tells stories with a rare honesty. \nOn her latest release Wholly Unholy\, Moussi’s dulcet tones whisper and cry as she plucks away alongside the jazz musings of guitarist Matt Moras. She is supported by the lush chords of her vocal army ‘The Songbirds’; consisting of Malia Sloman\, Anna Paddick and Mariel Korobilulu. \nMoussi fits a rigorous touring schedule in between the responsibilities of co-owning a café with fellow Songbird Malia Sloman. \n  \nFree listening on SoundCloud \n  \n

SUMMARY:Liz Frencham & Robbie Melville
DESCRIPTION:Think ‘Jazz/folk bass diva’ or ‘Wine-soaked love child of James Taylor and Julie London’. From sultry sass to raw intimacy\, with a little side order of irreverent humour! \nLiz first crossed paths with  Robbie in a rural Victorian café  in 2013 and soon they were seeking out opportunities to play together. From their first rehearsal it was evident that a lengthy musical relationship was on the cards. The obvious chemistry between the pair is intensified by a willingness to never play any song the same way twice. Frencham’s warmth is met by Melville’s beautiful harmonic dissonances\, and every nuance is distinct. \nOther successful collaborations Liz has been involved with include FrenchamSmith\, Jigzag & Dev’lish Mary and she continues to maintain a career as a respected accompanist\, producer and arranger both onstage and in the recording studio.  Her diverse gang of artists both national and international including While &  Matthews(UK)\, Gregory Page(US) \, Wouter Kellerman(Africa)\, Kristina Olsen(USA) and Mic Conway is ever expanding. \nAlways a luminous and generous presence\, Liz Frencham possesses that unique ability to hold an audience fondly in the palm of her hand. \n\n\n\n\nFrencham has a voice with all the appeal\, emotional honesty and clarity of someone like Shawn Colvin or Mary Chapin Carpenter. Yes\, really\, she is that good.” ~ Bruce Elder\, Sydney Morning Herald\n\n\n\nLiz Frencham is an ornament to music. The complete package: a superb song-writer\, sings like an angel\, and when Liz is on stage with one of her double-basses\, it’s like two parts of the one whole.” ~ RiotACT Online

SUMMARY:Abbie Cardwell
DESCRIPTION:Armed with her tenor banjo\, guitar\, ukulele\, harmonica and voice Abbie naturally writes songs that pay homage to the genres of her influences. Creating music from acoustic roots\, alt-country\, Americana to even vintage Mariachi rock and Spaghetti Western!? (Yup\, she sings a bit in Spanish too) Abbie keeps herself busy performing solo or with one of her several bands in Australia and Mexico. \nAbbie has “mastery of any style\, vindicating her title as ‘The Belle of Rootsy-Rockabilly-Twang’ (dB Mag) and has naturally attracted a string of songwriting awards to her collection of independently released albums. \nBold moves are Cardwells’ style. Which was her biggest you ask? Perhaps it was flying to Mexico on a ‘gut instinct’ to find a band to work with (sans Spanish & contacts) which consequently led to several collaborated albums\, tours and continued work. Or perhaps it was creating a 10 piece vintage Mexican Rocanrol band in Melbourne?. \nCurrently residing between friends and family’s driveways along the Australian East Coast with her beloved Toyota Hiace van Lady Luck Abbie is excitedly working on her next solo album release. (More to be revealed soon\, but yes…expect alt-country-americana with a pinch of mexican hot-sauce!) \n“Abbie Cardwell proves why she is truly one of Australia’s greatest female talents … Her range of musical talents are truly on show\, from deep\, unique songwriter to multi-instrumentalist\, she has every stone turned” ~ DB Magazine \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:The Bean Project
DESCRIPTION:Emerging from the forests of Belgrave come vibrant brass-clad acoustic duo The Bean Project. Featuring guitar and French horn\, The Bean Project encompass the territory of folk\, jazz and singer-songwriter genres\, showcasing a distinctly unique style of original material. \nAfter playing together in various acts\, Ben and Bryce focused their attention on something more raw and untreated\, forming The Bean Project at the beginning of 2014. With Ben at the helm of songwriting\, The Bean Project presented a simple yet distinctively eclectic style of original material\, complimented by a unique vocal tone to suit. By his side stands Bryce\, a man who’s horn ability is central to the sound of The Bean Project\, a seemingly effortless but priceless addition. \nHaving won the 2014/15 FReeZA Push Start Battle of the Bands and the Folk Alliance Australia Youth Awards 2016\,  performing with Melbourne names such as The Twoks\, The Woohoo Revue and 8Foot Felix\, The Bean Project are steadily making waves around Melbourne. \nTheir Live at Hothouse EP was released in August this year and they are now gearing up to record their first full length album in January ahead of touring the Australian folk festivals and their international debut in Kansas City.  But before all that\, they are looking forward to performing at Selby Folk club with an extended line-up. \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Jed Rowe
DESCRIPTION:Jed has been busy touring his new album\, The Last Day of Winter. Whilst the new record retains his  signature electric slide guitar playing\, he has expanded his creative palette beyond the power trio format of bass\, drums and guitars by bringing in Cat Canteri and Justin Bernasconi of The Stillsons. The result is a diverse collection of songs which focus on Rowe’s deft touch with story and melody\, with an emotional depth that resonates after the final note falls away. \nThe son of two musicians\, Jed Rowe grew up in rural NSW and relocated to Melbourne in 2003. He showed early promise as an author\, winning a national undergraduate short story writing award. He released a solo EP Life (2006) before forming The Jed Rowe Band and releasing two albums: Midnight Sun (2009) and The Ember And The Afterglow (2012)\, which was produced by ARIA Winner Jeff Lang. His work has garnered critical acclaim and national radio airplay\, and he was awarded a highly competitive Arts Victoria contemporary music grant in 2012. A festival regular\, Rowe has performed at Tamworth Country Music Festival\, Port Fairy Folk Festival and Thredbo Blues Festival amongst others. In 2014 Rowe toured internationally for the first time\, playing 25 solo dates in Europe in just 24 days. \n  \n \nSupport Act\nTina Nabb CD Launch\nAfter winning the Maldon Minstrel Award in 2015\, Tina went into producing her first CD Town And Country. Her songwriting style ranges from black comedy to social commentary\, and is characterized by a strong narrative. Topics include cyber bullying\, how to handle the undead\, domestic martyrdom\, and making rash decisions. Tina performs her songs at folk clubs\, open mic nights\, and other events in and around Victoria’s Dandenong Ranges. \nTina discovered her musical mojo when the kids left home and she bought her first ukulele. Then she went to a songwriting workshop and found the perfect avenue for her prose.

SUMMARY:Jenny Biddle
DESCRIPTION:It’s been a year since Jenny Biddle left Oz to live in sunny Scotland and practise the art of making a woodstove fire with wet wood. Now with new material and old favourites\, she’ll be touring Oz across summer and\, of course\, stopping off at Selby Folk Club. \nWith five albums under her belt and an iTunes chart-topping single\, indie folk/blues songsmith\, Jenny Biddle\, wraps herself around her guitar\, and like a marriage between body and instrument\, she commands the guitar to talk “with uncommon skill and absolute self-assurance” (Syke\, 2013). Her audience is compelled to join her on a voyage of passion and story in song. \nLive on stage\, with “a banter which is honest\, direct\, personal\, affectionate\, funny and utterly engaging” she has “that peculiar knack for making a large space like a lounge room” (Syke\, 2013)\, her audience laughs and cries in all the right places. There is an indisputable sophistication in her lyrics that touches upon issues that affect us all; love\, loss\, hopes and fears\, but also delves into the dark honesty of eating disorders\, sexuality\, depression\, only to be lifted by her unexpected comical interjections between songs. The guitar nuts are astounded by her ability to intertwine bass notes\, percussion and melody so seamlessly that one could believe there are more instrumentalists on stage. \n

SUMMARY:Cat Canteri
DESCRIPTION:Cat Canteri is a true musician in the sense that she lives for the music\, primarily as a solo artist but also with a rich history of collaboration with other bands and songwriters. Raised in the inner north of Melbourne\, Cat released three albums with The Stallions\, before releasing her debut album\, when We Were Young\,  in 2014\, \nNow\, in 2016\, Cat has released her brand new EP Late At Night which captures both the vitality and intimacy of her live shows across six new songs. Her folk meets country meets indie-rock style still shines through as she ventures into new territory with the electric slide guitar and a bold and unselfconscious vocal delivery. You can hear traces of The Pretenders\, Bonnie Raitt\, Eleanor Friedberger and Ryan Adams filtered through the organic rock ’n’ roll of The Faces as she captures both the dash and brio of the live atmosphere and the melancholy of the late-night comedown. \nHer songs document real life situations and experiences. You get the sense that Cat is revelling in being able to bring her songs and stories to life\, giving them a heartbeat and conveying a range of intimate and emotional states; from fragile to life-affirming. \n  \n“Whilst she has the vocal ability to take you to some really dark places\, she also has the freedom of expression to bring you back. Similarly\, whilst some of the songs have a vulnerability to them\, you never lose sight of the strength that’s needed to come back” ~ Fatea Magazine UK \n

SUMMARY:Louie and the Pride
DESCRIPTION:Louise MacGregor\, folky singer/songwriter\, had a successful solo career before teaming up with her great friend Ben O’Connell\, known broadly as The Fuzz. Ben’s flare for the dark blues added unmistakable flavour\, giving an edge and substance to Louie’s lighter pop/folk style. \nMeanwhile Louise’s sister in-law and Nova Marsh Rob Grosden\, both playing inAmberdance\, had been soothing souls with their unmistakable harmonies when the two pairs started jamming in 2010. The four very well blended voices brought the songs to life and the weekly jam sessions became weekend-long “band camps” on Louise’s Healesville veranda\, \nThe songs were immediately loaded to Triple J Unearthed\, where they sat high in the pop chart for weeks\, “Wake Me Up” reaching number two! 2015 the trend continues upward with the much awaited release of the crowd funded album “Wake Me Up” and the start of the “Louie and the Pride by Lamplight tour” \n

SUMMARY:Kimberley Wheeler Duo
DESCRIPTION:Originally from Geelong\, Victoria\, Kim started off in bands with electric bass and heavy metal. She has now moved on to a folky acoustic vibe. Widely respected as an amazing singer and grooving upright bass player; Kim has been a member of acoustic bands Little Rabbit\, Uncle Bill\, Appalachian Heaven as well as supporting the internationally renowned Dan Hicks as one of the Innocent Bystanders. \nHer award winning original songs are lyrical and quirky. In 2015 Kimberley was awarded the Tilley’s Choice Award for ‘Watching Over Joan’.  Her songs cover life commentary and social issues\, pure fun and some politics. In all of her music the melodies are compelling.  Her voice is in the alto range\, rich and mellow\, and is often compared to dark chocolate with its rich texture. \nJohn Gray joins Kimberley as the other half of the duo. He played on the SA bluegrass and folk scene when he was in his 20’s and 30’s but then stopped playing music for some time before coming out of early retirement to join Uncle Bill in recent years. He played in a band called Mississippi that was the precursor to the Little River Band and has recently played on the ‘Red Dog’ movie soundtrack. \n  \n \n  \nIntroducing the support act… \n  \nCathy Dobson\n \n  \nCathy is a multi-award winning singer/song writer performing mainly in Melbourne. She likes country\, country blues\, folk\, rock and bluegrass. Listen to music on Reverbnation \n

SUMMARY:David Hosking
DESCRIPTION:David Hosking is a rare jewel in the crown of songwriting. With a voice that is endearing\, honest\, tender but full of life. His stage performance is warm\, open\, raw\, gritty with an abundance of soul. The story telling speaks in a language that grabs a part of the human heart of which you can do nothing but cherish for life. David’s voice is reminiscent of Nick Cave meeting Nick Drake being smashed in the middle by early Tom Waits. \nDavid from Melbourne\, Australia has been writing\, recording and touring for over 20 years with multiple successful tours opening for Eddie Reader\, Foy Vance\, The Waifs\, Ron Sexsmith\, Boo Hewerdine\, Chris Wilson\, Shane O’Mara\, Rebecca Barnard\, Shelly Scown\, comedian Glynn Nicholas & Crowded House engineer Paul Kosky throughout Australia\, UK and Europe. \nTo date David has released seven albums\, and built a large and loyal following in Australia\, Europe and Ireland. Through the passing of each season Davids touring\, writing and recordings have moved in fresh new directions. His last two albums “All That Beauty” & forth coming album “Butterfly Net” due for release March 2017 have been recorded & produced by Paul “Hammy” Hamilton from Bangor County Down in Ireland – “Mostly known for his playing and producing and MD for singer song writer Foy Vance”. \n  \n“Hosking digs so deep for his truth that his voice trembles with it: hushed but always in command of a rich and skilled band of session players who are sometimes better known than he is.” ~ Michael Dwyer\,  The Age \n  \n“Troubadour David Hosking…he does things his way. No lofty ambition\, just honest toil for his craft …has a nose for witty poetry that he beautifully transforms into song… Hosking’s warm vocal doesn’t want for perfection\, yet thrives and shakes with passion in each song’s journey as if it’s an old friend”. ~ Scott Pedmore\, Sunday Herald Sun \n  \n \n  \nIntroducing the support act this month… \nJason & Simone\nJason and Simone are a local emerging acoustic duo creating a delicate blend of harmonic vocal and acoustic guitar in a sweet fusion of alternate country/folk songs\, telling tales of life and love lost ‘n’ found in their ever growing collection of original songs. They gather inspiration from life’s pivotal moments along with many artists such as Simon and Garfunkel\, Richard Thompson\, Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings to name a few! In 2015 they recorded their first 5 track E.P\, only available at gigs. \n

SUMMARY:Michael Waugh
DESCRIPTION:the tradition of the troubadour storyteller\, Michael Waugh is a unique\, intelligent and emotionally charged performer – giving a profound and genuine new voice to the Australian experience. \nSometimes compared to the honesty and power of Australian folk and country legends such as Mick Thomas\, Paul Kelly and John Williamson\, Michael’s voice is emerging as one of the rarest and most original of talents in the Australian roots music scene – he is the real deal. His songs and stories are gut-wrenchingly honest\, emotionally brave and compellingly beautiful. He sings about growing up in an East Gippsland dairy farming community\, working and living in inner city Melbourne and of being a dad – moving audiences to laugh\, cry and sing along to songs where they recognise their own lives in the music. \nMichael is back at Selby to launch his new album ‘What We Might Be’ produced by Shane Nicholson. This collection of songs tell stories inspired by those American musicians and songwriters who were the soundtrack of Michael’s childhood. The texture of their rhyme and meter is the shacks and bars and snowdrifts of American life. These are replaced by magpies and lawnmowers and footy games – the beauty and poetry reflected in every day rural life. Maffra\, Heyfield and Sale may not have the exotic twang of Nashville – but there’s the Macalister Hotel\, Mafeking Hill\, the Heyfield Timber Mills and more cows than you would ever want to have to get up at 5am to milk. \n  \n“There’s no mystery as to why ARIA Award winning musician / songwriter / producer Shane Nicholson wanted to work with Michael Waugh: both are sensitive\, insightful songwriters and storytellers\, and together they’ve created this outstanding debut release.” ~ Billy Pinnell\, Stack \n  \n \n  \nIntroducing this month’s support act… \nHannah & Sadie\nHannah & Sadie is a duo made up of two young\, talented singer-songwriters\, Hannah Schmidli and Sadie\, Girl on the Hill. The girls perform original songs and are known for their beautiful harmonies. \nBoth girls are currently in high school and have already released their first solo albums: \nHannah & Sadie have performed at various festivals around Victoria including Maldon Folk Festival\, National Celtic Festival\, Knox Festival\, Selby Fest and at venues such as The Flying Saucer Club\, Sooki Lounge and the Selby Folk Club. \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Kristian Mizzi
DESCRIPTION:Khristian Mizzi is a Melbourne artist known for his powerful original songs and his intimate live performances. Mizzi’s songs explore humanity\, social injustice\, and hope\, inspiring and enlivening audiences wherever he plays. \nGrowing up in rural Victoria\, Khristian developed an early love for music and was performing regularly by the age of sixteen. He has spent the last 20 years traveling up and down the highways of Australia\, connecting with audiences in small towns\, rural outposts\, and big cities\, and becoming a mainstay of the live music scene in Melbourne. \nDuring that time\, Khristian has released three studio albums – The Road Between (2008)\, A Beautiful World (2009)\, and Midwinter Spring (2014) – and toured both in Australia and internationally. Decades of experiences recording\, playing live shows\, and living as a global citizen and father have seen Mizzi grow into a seasoned artist who brings a quiet\, vibrant calm to his live performances. \nWith a folk sound that recalls the greats of the 1970’s Contemporary Folk movements\, Mizzi creates a connection with the past while offering a fresh new voice to the ‘words and chords’ tradition.\nThe recent release of the single ‘We Ain’t All Equal’ – a stirring cry for action in the face of political cruelty and social apathy – marks Khristian Mizzi’s first solo release since his acclaimed debut in 2008. It is the first single from his upcoming EP\, which is set for release in 2017. \n  \n“His voice is just like a big warm hug” – Pia Nesvara (Singer/Songwriter)\n\n“Aching\, folk music that speaks of Australian history\, underpinned by a wonderful melodic sensibility. Stirring stuff” – Anthea Palmer\, (Sound Music Business) \n  \n \n  \nIntroducing this month’s support act… \nFolk Train CD Launch\nHailing from ‘The Hills’ near Melbourne\, FolkTrain plays a mixture of original and traditional songs\, and between them the band members play guitar\, fiddle\, mandolin\, octave mandolin\, banjo\, accordion\, pan pipes and harmonica. Straddling styles and sounds from the Delta Blues\, Appalachian Bluegrass\, English Folk and all stops in between\, his highly original tunes are infused with exciting and soulful guitar playing. \nRaised in the small Cambridgeshire village of Warboys – famed for witches and WW2 Lancaster Bombers – Bernasconi was never short of a story to tell. SUMMARY:Charm of Finches
DESCRIPTION:Charm of Finches are a Melbourne-based duo featuring young sisters Mabel and Ivy Windred-Wornes. Theirs is music to gaze at stars by and their dreamy folk sound is awash with their signature angelic sibling vocal harmonies and stunning song-writing. \nThey are winners of the 2017 National Folk Festival Gill Rees Young Musicians’ Award\, and their debut album\, Staring at the Starry Ceiling was named one of the best releases of 2016 by Radio National’s Paul Gough. \n“For a duo so young to conjure a full album of music so candid and original as this is astonishing …. Charm of Finches sound like they’re mining something far more ancient and universal.” ~ Rhythms Magazine \n“There’s also the simple beauty of family voices intertwining\, with Charm Of Finches’ Mabel & Ivy – and even their names seem perfectly anachronistic for the folk purity of their music…slightly mystical alternate reality\, maybe owing something to Joanna Newsom and that ilk. Despite – or perhaps because of – their youth\, the music they make is affecting and emotional.”  ~ The Music \n“Charm of Finches make gorgeous chamber pop…their harmonies are immaculate and stirring as they move through an honest and\, well\, charming lyric.” ~ Tone Deaf \n  \n\n

She has toured the UK\, formed Trad 5 piece ‘Stray Hens’\, & continues to write original music. \n“Mandy Connell is a folk festival favourite. She’s quick\, bright-hearted and liable to break into song mid-sentence. On stage she conjures up moods with an ease that comes from living her music. “I identify as folk\,” she says. “If there was an ethnic group you could call folk\, that would be me. I’m there. I grew up in it\, and I’ve always called myself folk… since before banjos were on t-shirts.” ~ James M Fahy (Wait Long by The River) \nWinning the Declan Affley Award (National Folk Festival) in 2005 and the the Maldon Minstrel Award (Maldon Festival) in 2006\, Mandey came second at the Port Fairy Songs of Peace and Tolerance Competition in 06 for her song ‘Riots in Redfern’. \nSelling out of the 2010 album Tall Tales & Pretty Colours\, and due to record the Girl Who Fell Off The Wall in 2015\, Mandy has collected a steady following with endorsements from Paul Brady\, Weddings Parties Anything\, and from well known songwriters Judy Small and Eric Bogle as much for her reinterpretations of their work as for her own songs. \n“Mandy Connell is the latest in a long and distinguished line of talented female musicians to grace the musical scene in Australia. A fine singer and songwriter in her own right\, she also has the knack of taking other peoples’ songs\, and by virtue of her original and unique interpretations making them her own\, the mark of a truly gifted performer…” ~ Eric Bogle \n

SUMMARY:Cat Canteri (CD Launch)
DESCRIPTION:Cat Canteri is a true musician in the sense that she lives for the music\, primarily as a solo artist but also with a rich history of collaboration with other bands and songwriters.  Her last EP release in 2016\, Late At Night  captured both the vitality and intimacy of her live shows and ventured into new territory with the electric slide guitar and a bold and unselfconscious vocal delivery. \nRecorded live to tape by Jeff Lang\, its spirit was born from long hours spent singing and playing on the well-trodden stages of bars and clubs across Australia. The recording encapsulates the verve and passion Cat brings to her guitar playing and the soulful depth of emotion she can convey in her songs. \nHer  highly anticipated new album\, Inner North\, is due for release in May 2018. \n“Is a thoughtful piece\, perfectly musically layered and showcasing Canteri’s wonderful tones\, in short gorgeous” ~ The Boarder Mail \n“Whilst she has the vocal ability to take you to some really dark places\, she also has the freedom of  xpression to bring you back. Similarly\, whilst some of the songs have a vulnerability to them\, you never lose sight of the strength that’s needed to come back” ~ Fatea Magazine UK \n
